Victim Blaming & Legal Consequences

Victim blaming is a pervasive societal issue in Pakistan, where women, girls, and even children are often held responsible for crimes committed against them, such as sexual assault or harassment. This harmful mindset discourages survivors from reporting offenses and seeking legal recourse, effectively silencing them and perpetuating injustice.

Psychologically, victim blaming can cause severe trauma, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, and long-term emotional distress. The law, however, explicitly recognizes the rights of victims and provides mechanisms to protect them, including filing FIRs, seeking protection orders, and accessing legal aid.

Despite these protections, the influence of power, corruption, and societal pressure can obstruct justice. In this context, the media plays a crucial role: responsible reporting and public awareness can exert pressure on authorities to ensure that justice is served, regardless of the perpetrator’s influence.

Ultimately, combating victim blaming is not only a legal obligation but a societal responsibility, ensuring that survivors can pursue justice without fear or stigma.
